Why travel to Merida without experiencing the delicious food? Although Apoala was the best meal that we had in Merida, there are still amazing places to experience tasty Yucatean food.
Here are four places you can chow down at in Merida (in no particular order).
La Cantina Negrita
La Cantina Negra is a super popular bar with an awesome lively vibe. When you first walk in, you’d think it’s a small space, but it’s actually quite expansive with its backyard patio filled with dozens of tables.
Grab a few drinks at the bar or grab a table and flag down a waiter.
You get free snacks while you drink, like paprika spiced popcorn and chicharron. These snacks vary by night and some people even make a meal of it.
This is an amazing place to hang out and unwind with live music. The only bad thing is that they close at 10pm!

Los Platos Rotos
Los Platos Rotos (The Broken Plates) is a local restaurant that is great for breakfast or lunch (closes at 5pm). Daily menu is handwritten on a chalkboard, and service is friendly (even if you don’t speak Spanish). Los Platos Rotos is budget friendly too.
Mole Chicken topped with sesame seeds. Mole is a chili pepper based sauce made up a mix ingredients that can include nuts and chocolate. This one at Los Platos Rotos added a depth of delicious flavor to incredibly tender chicken.

Mercado 60
Mercacdo 60 is an upscale outdoor food court filled with about a dozen or so food and drink vendors. You can choose from Mexican, barbeque, sushi, and a variety of other cuisines. Good for groups too.
Great vibe with tons of people watching over live music. You order your food from each vendor and tables are first come first serve.
Ki’o’och, one of the vendors near the back, stood out.
We ordered the Platillo degustacion (Yucatecan tasting dish). This features panucho (refried tortilla that is stuffed with refried black beans and topped with pulled chicken, tomato, and avocado), polcan, codzitos (stuffed tortillas), empanada, and a sandwich.

La Reina Itzalana
Located at Parque Santiago, La Reina Itzalana was the busiest restaurant in the area in the late night. We came here after a few drinks and bites at La Negrita Cantina.
The Nachos con Pastor Especial (special nachos with pork) was amazing and could easily feed two people. Yes, it was mighty tasty!
