Chez Ma Tante is a new restaurant that just popped up in Greenpoint. They’re featuring a Montreal-inspired (which means French/Canadian) dinner menu.
I saw Chez Ma Tante’s menu on Gothamist when they opened shop in April, and their menu is incredibly undescriptive by design. Because of that, I had a really really really hard time figuring out if we should try it.
Dishes are simply listed, like “Steak Tartare” or “Caesar Salad”. It’s hard to figure out what spectrum of a Caesar Salad you’re going to get. Is it like the bottomless caesar salad you get at Olive Garden? Or is it like the one piece of uncut lettuce at some fancy pants Michelin star restaurant?
So that night I kept oscillating between going to Chez Ma Tante or trying something else until more reviews came in.
Surprisingly, Chez Ma Tante turned out to be one of the best new restaurants we’ve tried in Brooklyn in recent memory.
Here’s what we had at Chez Ma Tante
Pardon my awful photos on this one.
Steak tartare with caraway and celery seeds. Spiked with chardonnay ad fish sauce. This is possibly the best steak tartare I had in a long time.
Marinated mussels and clams. Fresh, briny, and acidic. So tasty!
Grilled veal with green sauce and beans. It’s a slab of veal tongue — tender enough to eat with just a fork.
Grilled monkfish with almonds and beets. I think there may have been ramps in this one. What shined in this one for me were the beets. The beet skin was blistering on the outside and tender on the inside.
To drink. Old Fashioned — rye based and classic. Also ordered a glass of Trepot and Gamay.

We highly recommend Chez Ma Tante. Waitstaff is on point. Ambiance is cozy and casually classy. I’ve already booked another reservation for dinner.
